Transition San Fernando Valley
a free workshop and presentation

Note: event recommended, not organized by 7th Congress

The Future is about Resilience:
A community workshop on Transition in the San Fernando Valley

at
Sepulveda UU Society - "The Onion"
9550 Haskell Ave, North Hills

For further details:  Bill Maxwell    coyote _dreaming@pacbell.net

What would a decline in the availability of cheap energy from fossil fuels mean for the quality of life in the car-dependent San Fernando Valley?

Will a changing climate bring with it further restrictions in our use of water, and how might that impact the security of our food supply?

Is the Great Recession of 2009 just a temporary bump in the economic road, or an indication that our globalized economy is bumping up against the limits to growth on a finite planet?

Come help envision the future of the San Fernando Valley at a free workshop and presentation.

From Bruce Woodside of Transition SFV:

Over the past few months, a small group of us living in the good ol' birthplace of suburbia, the San Fernando Valley, have been meeting regularly to discuss the Transition Initiative (see http://transitionculture.org/)

Jon Beggs, Mitzi Hoag, and I had all taken a one-day introductory class over a year ago at the Los Angeles Transition Hub in Westchester (see www.TransitionLA.org). Joanne Poyourow, of Environmental Change-Makers (www.EnviroChangeMakers.org) has been working for a couple of years now to bring Rob Hopkins' Transition Towns movement here to the big city, and has continued to encourage us to do something in the Valley. And here's our first something:

On Saturday afternoon, February 6, 2010, beginning at 2 and running until 6-ish, we're going to be holding a workshop and community discussion on the Transition Initiative in the San Fernando Valley - why it should happen, what it might look like - testing the waters to see if we can inspire enough grassroots energy in the community to really get this thing up and running.

The program will consist of a short slide presentation to provide some context for understanding the problems we're going to be grappling with, and a much longer Open Space forum in which we brainstorm local approaches to Transition solutions. It's free. There will be food. And food for thought.

Our program is entitled, "The Future Is About Resilience", and we really believe that's going to be our focus going forward. Transition is about building (or reviving) the local back-up systems that may have to come into play in the event of an emergency, no matter how long that emergency may last. And that starts with designing a lower energy lifestyle for ourselves on an individual basis and with friends, family, and neighbors on a community basis.

We have no idea if this will work, but we're going to give it a try. Our discussions will be somewhat Valley-centric, but we could certainly use your help, your energy, and your ideas, even if you don't live on this side of the hill.

The event will be held at The Onion, the Universalist Unitarian church at 9550 Haskell Avenue, just off the 405 in North Hills. If you can't make it, there will be other occasions, workshops and gatherings. Even if you can't join us for this one, please help us out by spreading the word to others who may be interested, especially to other groups working on the same kinds of issues. Thanks, and I hope to see you there!

Bruce Woodside

Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 9 am to 6 pm

Urban/Suburban Ecoliteracy Workshop
at
NativeScape Development Corp. headquarters in Pacoima, CA
10849 Ralston Avenue; Pacoima, CA 91331
Firm deadline for registration is February 13th, no exceptions.

Just as none of us learned the principles of practical financial literacy in school, none of us were taught the practical principles of how to live on a finite planet. Sustainability is not possible without ecological literacy as a foundation. Although many of us know or intuitively sense that we’re collectively facing multiple environmental problems and challenges, it all seems and feels overwhelming. The good news is that solutions are available; positive change and transformation is a matter of scale, quality of consciousness, and willingness to move from paralysis to action. Since gardens and landscapes are often the most frequent interface people have with nature on a daily basis, this is the context for the content of the workshop.

If you care about the future of your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, you owe it to yourself and to them to pass on a better environmental legacy as opposed to deeper ecological debt. Striving for authentic sustainability at this point in human history is requisite for our survival as a species and it entails attunement with earth’s systems and cycles – the sources of our collective survival, well-being, and wealth. Human settlements appropriate all of the material and energetic means of their sustenance and economic activity from the planet. Ecology trumps economy – it always has and always will.

Just a taste of what you will learn:
~ The myriad (and surprising) ways that the quality of your life is intertwined with your local community, watershed, state, nation, the international community, and the planet and why all these connections matter
~ Ten common garden and landscape myths and misconceptions that often lead to expensive errors
~ The one important key theme common to all high quality, ecologically literate garden and landscape design (and all other good design, for that matter)
~ The concrete steps of a systematic approach to landscape and garden project management that saves you time, money, and water while preventing wasted effort – very important for DIY homeowners
~ How to do a site analysis and assessment within an urban/suburban context – this is fundamental to successful and site/climate appropriate garden design and it is applied systems thinking in action.

If you are creating your garden or landscape from scratch, revamping your garden, and/or are tentative
about how or where to start, this workshop is oriented to help you get your bearings. If you are converting your conventional garden or lawn to a drought tolerant CA native garden or edible landscape, congratulations! This workshop will help you too. If you seek ways to integrate sustainability into your life and landscape, this introductory workshop will help you reset your mindset and perceptions so that the content from classes and
workshops in organic gardening, greener living, garden design with drought tolerant & CA native plants, and Permaculture are easier to integrate into your life. This workshop offers the deep, strong foundation you need – we will take you from concept to concrete, grounding your intellectual understanding of environmental issues with practical knowledge and wisdom.

Two professional ecological designers will be teaching the very same practical skills that they use regularly in their businesses in this intensive all-day workshop. Wendy Talaro of Fruits to Nuts and Steve Hernandez of NativeScape Development Corp. will lead workshop participants in a systematic way through the process of ecological design and problem solving.

Important enrollment details:
~ Bilingual instruction in English and Espaņol with real time translation is available

~ Enrollment is strictly limited on a first come, first served basis to 16 individuals

~ Early registration until February 6th is $40. Registration after February 6th is $50.

~ Homework (2.1 MB PDF file) will only be sent to you via e-mail or snail mailed upon receipt of payment.

~ Make checks payable to Wendy Talaro and send to P.O. Box 2382; Gardena, CA 90247

Free Introduction to Permaculture Classes
Register at www.sustainablehabitats.org

Permaculture offers positive solutions to the problems facing the world. Using ecology as the basis for designing integrated
systems of food production, housing, technology and community development, you can learn to create a sustainable environment
wherever you are.
An Introduction to Permaculture Class is an outline of the science and art of Permaculture. It defines the terms and
history, its founders, the curriculum of the design course certificate, its ethics and foundations. It will describe the
benefits and show some of the most important work undertaken by permaculture designers.
