Permaculture Advisor and Instructor for the Vets Garden

Date:  ASAP! We hope to have our initial planting day on weekend of May 9, 2008

Sponsoring Organization: Urban Farming, for the Vets Garden Horticultural Therapy Program

Location: The Vets Garden in Westwood:

Looking for: Volunteer Advisor/instructor on a once-per-month basis to instruct a group of Veterans in planting a 'permaculture' garden. This would be on the Urban Farming garden plot, on the premises of their 15 acre garden. The Vets Garden is a horticultural therapy program for veterans, and provides a learning garden in a safe environment, providing skills-training for this  program as they move out of the hospitals and transition into work and outside living. They grow, maintain and sell their fruits, flowers, vegetables to the public to help support their program.  http://www.gla.med.va.gov/vetsgarden/vetsgarden.cfm   and  http://www.capitalpress.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=1007&SectionID=67&SubSectionID=616&S=1

Urban Farming is a non-profit organization whose mission is to eradicate hunger by planting food on unused land and space with community members and giving it to people in need. We will sponsor this particular garden site and permaculture program of learning new growing and self-sustaining skills for the veterans benefit.  Please watch our trailer for the who/what/how of Urban Farming. http://www.urbanfarming.org/trailer.html

We look to find a permaculture expert who would consider this an opportunity to help veterans in skills training and enhancing their program while helping toward donating produce grown to people in need. Your expertise would be a tremendous contribution to enhance their overall program and will help ease them into implementing the permaculture approach within their garden at large. The 15-acre garden is an incredible environment that has 'everything' already, yet not being utilized to its maximum. The food grown on this site will be given to the the Vets Garden to sell at their weekly Farmers Market as well as to the Westside Food Bank for people in need.
